In this study, we investigated how the facets of competence that clinician raters perceive in a trainee relate to their entrustment decisions, that is, their decisions about how much supervision a trainee needs for a given professional activity. Sixty-seven advanced medical students took part in an assessment simulating the first day of a resident physician. We found a positive correlation between competence and entrustment scores, with a different correlation pattern for each activity, suggesting that each professional activity encompasses a different set of competences.
